Pink October – Breast Cancer Awareness Month
On October 20, 2025, Communities Thrive Organization (CTO) conducted an online awareness session on breast cancer and health sustainability.
The session aimed to raise awareness about the importance of early detection and promote sustainable health practices among women.
A female doctor who is also a member of CTO facilitated the session. She clearly explained key information, answered all participants’ questions, and provided professional consultations.
A total of 20 women attended and benefited from the session. Additionally, a short educational video was produced, featuring step-by-step guidance on early breast cancer screening to ensure maximum benefit and long-term awareness among participants.
Project: Empowering Refugees with Livelihood Skills
Workshop Report: Reusable Sanitary Pads Production Training
Background
On the 17.April.2025 as part of the Empowering Refugees with Livelihood Skills project, Communities Thrive Organization (CTO) organized a practical workshop on the production of reusable sanitary pads in Kampala.
This project aims to economically empower 20 refugee women and strengthen connections between support organizations that support refugee consumers and the refugee producers. The initiative also seeks to reduce dependency by transforming refugees from consumers into active producers capable of generating income and contributing to their communities.
Overall Project Goal
To economically empower refugees and create sustainable livelihood opportunities by providing hands-on training in essential skills such as soap making, hand sanitizer production, computer maintenance, and food processing — while connecting refugee producers with organizations that provide support for refugee consumers in camps.
Specific Workshop Objectives
· To equip participants with practical sewing skills to produce reusable sanitary pads.
· To promote menstrual hygiene and dignity among refugee women and girls.
· To encourage small-scale production for income generation and self-reliance.
Activities Conducted
· Demonstration of pad patterns, fabric selection, and materials preparation.
· Hands-on practice in cutting, sewing, and assembling reusable pads.
· Awareness discussions on menstrual hygiene, health, and environmental sustainability.
Results and Achievements
· 20 women successfully completed the training and produced their first reusable sanitary pads.
· Participants gained confidence and expressed interest in starting small home-based businesses.
· Increased awareness on menstrual hygiene and reduction of stigma around the topic.
Challenges
· Limited access to high-quality sewing materials.
· Lack of external funding was a significant challenge; however, the workshop was successfully implemented through the dedicated efforts and voluntary contributions of CTO teams, demonstrating strong internal commitment and teamwork.
Conclusion
workshop was part of CTO’s continuous effort to build self-reliance, dignity, and economic resilience among refugees. Through the production of reusable sanitary pads, participants not only learned valuable skills but also gained the opportunity to contribute to their household income and community well-being.
This initiative is a step forward in connecting refugee producers with supporting organizations that provide support to refugee consumers, ensuring sustainable livelihoods and a stronger, more resilient refugee community.

Background
On the 10.Dec.2024, as part of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence session, Communities Thrive Organization (CTO) organized a community awareness session of 20 women participants to raise understanding about the causes, forms, and consequences of GBV. The session aimed to empower women and girls to speak up, seek help, and participate actively in building safer communities.
Objectives
To increase community awareness about GBV and its impact on women and families.
To promote respect, equality, and non-violence within households and communities.
To encourage survivors and witnesses to report GBV incidents safely.
Activities Conducted
An interactive awareness session led by CTO facilitator, focusing on understanding GBV, prevention, and available support services.
Group discussions that encouraged participants to share personal views and community experiences.
Production of an awareness video highlighting messages of women’s empowerment, resilience, and the importance of ending gender-based violence.
Key Results
20 community members reached with clear messages on GBV prevention and women’s rights.
Increased awareness among participants about how to identify and respond to cases of violence.
The awareness video produced served as a tool for broader outreach and continued advocacy on social media.
Participants expressed motivation to share the message with others in their community.
Conclusion
The session strengthened women’s voices and confidence, while the awareness video amplified their message beyond the event. CTO remains committed to promoting equality, respect, and the protection of all women and girls from violence.
Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) policy training
Today 19.Dec.2025, a training on the Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) policy was conducted
for a number of volunteers and members of Communities Thrive Organization (CTO), as part of our commitment to providing a safe environment that respects human dignity and prioritizes the protection of beneficiaries—especially women and children.
The training focused on:
* An introduction to the PSEA policy and its importance
* Expected professional conduct for volunteers
* Reporting obligations and complaints mechanisms
* The principle of zero tolerance for any form of exploitation or abuse
At the end of the session, participants were awarded Certificates of Participation in recognition of their attendance and commitment to the organization’s safeguarding policies.
At CTO, we believe that building awareness and responsibility among volunteers is a key step toward ensuring safe, ethical, and accountable humanitarian action.

On this day in the year 2000, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security.
This resolution affirms that women play an essential role in building peace and that protecting them from violence during conflicts is a collective responsibility.
